Our Media

Technology in this time is undoubtedly the one of the most important aspects that keeps our economy running. According to DigAdminz ( Oct. 18, 2019), life without technology is pointless in today’s dynamic world, because technology, which brings together tools to promote development, use and information exchange, has as its main objective of making tasks easier and the solving of many problems of mankind. Technology has also made communicating with other people easier, with the creation of emails and social media platform. Although technology is very helpful to us and our society, there will always be something bad about technology like, easier access to private information, the spread of fake news and even sometimes the decrease of interaction with loved ones, but does this decrease of interaction really happen to every family? That is why our teacher asked us to record our family’s daily media  usage and also our family interactions for 1 week to see if technology has decreased our interaction with one another.

A short introduction about my family before we start. Both of my parents have jobs and they usually work from early morning to evening during the weekdays and in the weekend they often go out to buy stuff that we need in the house or pay some bills.

Figure 1: My Table

Here is my table for the week, as you can see on December 9, 2020,I spent 3 hours on Facebook,2 hours and 23 minutes on Youtube, 5 hours and 30 minutes on MS Teams,1 hour and 20 minutes watching T.V., 30 minutes talking with family members and 25 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 10, 2020,I spent 2 hours on Facebook, 24minutes on Youtube, 2 hours and 10 minutes on MS Teams, 25 minutes watching T.V., 40 minutes talking with family members and 30 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 12, 2020,I spent 2 hours on Facebook, 1 hour and 30 minutes on Youtube, 1 hours and 21 minutes on MS Teams, 10 minutes watching T.V., 30 minutes talking with family members and 1 hour Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 13, 2020,I spent 1 hour and 3 minutes on Facebook, 1 hour and 3 minutes on Youtube, 1 hour and 42 minutes on MS Teams, 2 minutes on Gmail, 15 minutes watching T.V., 30 minutes talking with family members and 30 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members. Figure 2: My Mom’s data

For My Mom’s data, on December 9,2020, she spent 2 minutes on Facebook, 39 minutes on Youtube, 48 seconds on Instagram, 20 minutes watching T.V., 30 minutes talking with family members and 25 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 10, 2020, she spent 1 minute on Facebook,1 hour on Youtube,10 minutes watching T.V., 40 minutes talking with family members and 30 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 11, 2020, she spent 4 hours on Youtube,10 minutes watching T.V., 20 minutes talking with family members and 10 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 12, 2020, she spent 4 hours on Youtube, 20 minutes watching T.V., 30 minutes talking with family members and1 hour Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 13, 2020, she spent 2 hours on Facebook,1 hour and 3 minutes on Youtube,1 hour and 42 minutes on MS Teams, 2 minutes on Gmail, 10 minutes watching T.V., 50 minutes talking with family members and 30 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members.

Figure 3: My Dad’s data

Lastly, for my father’s data On December 9, 2020,he got to work when I was still asleep and went home when I was asleep that is why there is no data about him for December 9, On December 10, 2020, he spent 20 minutes watching T.V., 40 minutes talking with family members and 30 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members. On December 11, 2020,he got to work when I was still asleep and went home when I was asleep that is why there is no data about him for December 11. On December 12, 2020,he got to work when I was still asleep and went home when I was asleep that is why there is no data about him for December 12. On December 13, 2020, he spent 2 hours and 38 minutes using Youtube, 10 minutes watching T.V. and 20 minutes talking with family members. On December 14, 2020, he spent 2 hours and 30 minutes using Youtube, 10 minutes watching T.V. and 10 minutes talking with family members. On December 15, 2020, he spent 2 hours using Youtube, 10 minutes watching T.V., 10 minutes talking with family members and 30 minutes Eating while watching T.V. with family members.

In my opinion, my family’s family interaction is quite low, but this is because my parents are always busy due to work. That is why I asked my friend and we compared our data, my friend’s mother of which is home most of the time.

Figure 4: My Friend’s data

As you can see from the data above, she spends 45 minutes a day eating lunch with her family, 1 hour a day eating dinner and 30 minutes for casual talks, with that data in mind we could say that she spends more time with her family than i do with my family.

In conclusion, we could say that technology affects our interaction as a family, but we need to consider other things as well, such as the interest of the family, they may have different hobbies and they really do not have that much chemistry together that is why they do not interact with one another that much and as for my family, I could say that the reason is because they are busy all the time and our interest and taste in music and films are also different, that is why our family interaction is only a short period in a day.
